En la fase final y disputa por el tercer lugar, la Selección de Costa Rica finalizó ante Jamaica su participación en la competencia de Concacaf, en un encuentro que las ticas perdieron 0-1.
Costa Rica apostó por un fútbol 100% ofensivo, buscando abrir el marcador desde el arranque para darle un poco de tranquilidad al equipo y manejar los hijos del partido, pero las jamaiquinas tenían claro lo que se estaban jugando; algo mucho más que un tercer lugar por la competencia. El pase al repechaje para las olimpiadas estaba sobre la mesa y ninguno de los dos conjuntos lo dejaría ir fácilmente.
Entre Priscila Chinchilla, Melissa Herrera y Raquel Rodríguez se encargaron de causar terror en el marco que defendió la guardameta Rebecca Spencer, con constantes remates, pero que, para fortuna de las caribeñas, los disparos se fueron desviados.
El primer tiempo finalizó con la igualdad a cero en el marcador y con un juego más pausado, producto del estilo brusco de las jamaiquinas.
Para el complemento la historia fue otra. La Sele se vio frenada en su ímpetu por atacar, al enfrentarse a un equipo de reggae girls distinto, con la clara idea de no ponérsela tan fácil a Costa Rica.
Las dirigidas por Lorne Donaldson se adueñaron de la segunda parte y, con jugadoras como Drew Spence, así como Jody Brown, pusieron a sufrir a la defensa nacional y probaron las destrezas de la meta costarricense Daniela Solera.
La más clara para La Sele fue sobre los tres minutos de reposición, cuando, sola frente al marco, Raquel Rodríguez disparó, pero los palos también juegan y el izquierdo le dijo no a la legionaria tica.
Con un gran cero en el marcador se fueron a los tiempos suplementarios, donde el desgaste físico y el calor se hicieron notorios en Costa Rica.
El gol de Jamaica llegó desde el banquillo al minuto 102’, cuando Kalyssa Vanzanten, en corrida por la derecha,
burló a la defensa nacional para arriesgar y disparar a marco, consiguiendo el 0-1. Único gol que bastó para que las del Caribe se dejaran, no solo el tercer lugar de la competencia, sino también la posibilidad de disputar en setiembre del 2023 el repechaje con una serie de ida y vuelta ante quien quede de subcampeón de la Concacaf.
A pesar de caer ante Jamaica La Sele regresará a territorio nacional con el boleto al Mundial de la FIFA, Australia y Nueva Zelanda 2023 en las manos.
