*Costa Rica se presenta con 12 ajedrecistas.
Fiji y la República Democrática de Santo Tomé y Príncipe, serán los primeros contrincantes de Costa Rica en la edición 44 de la Olimpiada de Ajedrez, que inicia este viernes 29 de julio y se extenderá al 10 de agosto en Chennai, India.
La Selección Nacional de Ajedrez, a cargo del Gran Maestro Bernal González, recibe con entusiasmo la oportunidad de regresar a la presencialidad con el evento más importante del deporte ciencia, que organiza la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE).
Son 12 los integrantes del equipo tricolor, seis en open y seis en femenino.
En masculino viajaron Mauricio Arias, de 45 años de edad, 15 veces seleccionado y dos veces campeón nacional; Leonardo Valdés, 46 años, seis veces campeón nacional absoluto y tres veces campeón centroamericano absoluto; Gabriel Chaves, 27 años, tercer lugar absoluto 2022; Eugenio Chinchilla, 56 años, campeón nacional +50 absoluto; y David Cabezas, 18 años, subcampeón panamericano U20 el año pasado.
En femenino Tania Hernández, 58 años, campeona nacional femenina 2022; Sofía Mayorga, 12 años, múltiple campeona nacional categorías menores de U8 hasta U15 y subcampeona del mundo U13 este año; María Ramírez, 25 años, medalla de oro en los Juegos Deportivos Universitarios; Kristel Díaz, 17 años, subcampeona nacional femenino 2020, 2021 y 2022, múltiple campeona nacional categorías pares e impares; y María Rodríguez, Maestra Internacional.

Lo cierto es que las agencias de noticias exponen que por el momento, India se encuentra en la posición casi imposible de tratar de mantener buenas relaciones tanto con Rusia como con Estados Unidos y Europa.
Además, se interponen las elecciones de la FIDE, que “tradicionalmente se llevan a cabo junto con la Olimpiada cada cuatro años. El exvicepresidente ruso Arkady Dvorkovich fue elegido en 2018 en Batumi. Sus lazos con Rusia habían asegurado una buena financiación para los proyectos de la FIDE, pero la guerra lo ha visto enfrentar demandas de renuncia, sobre todo de los ajedrecistas ucranianos”, manifiestan los medios internacionales.
Añaden que en una entrevista en suelo estadounidense, “Dvorkovich pareció correr riesgos personales al condenar la guerra y apoyar las restricciones a los jugadores rusos. Eso hizo que Dmitry Rogozin, otro ex viceprimer ministro de Rusia y jefe del programa espacial ruso, lo criticara fuertemente. Rogozin ha sido uno de los partidarios más vocales de Vladimir Putin en su última guerra”.
Eso sí, se espera que el torneo muestre un nivel alto y que en este 2022 sea lo que tradicionalmente son las Olimpiadas.
