El surfista costarricense Carlos “Cali” Muñoz competirá en el Billabong Pro Pipeline, la primera parada del Championship Tour 2023, según anunció la World Surf League (WSL) esta tarde y lo comunicó la Federación de Surf de Costa Rica.
La convocatoria de Muñoz se da luego de que el marroquí Ramzi Boukhiam sufriera una lesión en los últimos días. El atleta oriundo de Jacó se ha mantenido enfocado preparándose en la región pacífico norte y pacífico central de Costa Rica, esperando el llamado de la WSL y desde el jueves pasado se encuentra en Hawaii esperando su oportunidad.
En diciembre, Cali fue elegido como wildcard para ser el primer reemplazo durante la temporada (cubrir la ausencia de algún surfista clasificado) lo que le otorgó la posibilidad de participar en los eventos del CT.
Es el primer surfista masculino del país que llega a la máxima división de la WSL. Lo hizo por primera vez en el 2022, edición en la que se lesionó el hombro derecho, quedando fuera de competición en el primer evento en Pipeline, Hawaii. Luego de recuperarse de la cirugía, tuvo una participación más en la parada del CT que se realizó en El Salvador, en junio.
Carlos Muñoz estará por segundo año consecutivo en el Billabong Pro Pipeline, para llevar junto a Brisa Hennessy la bandera de Costa Rica en los hombros.
La primera fecha del Championship Tour tiene llamado de inicio para este miércoles a las 11:45 a.m. y la ventana del torneo finaliza el viernes 10 de febrero. Brisa Hennessy se ubica en el heat 4, junto a las australianas Isabella Nichols y Sally Fitzgibbons, mientras que Muñoz se enfrentará al mítico estadounidense Kelly Slater y el brasileño Caio Ibelli.
Los mejores diez hombres y las mejores ocho mujeres del ranking al final de la temporada clasificarán a los Juegos Olímpicos París 2024.
