Un mar picado y corrientes cambiantes fueron el principal reto para los triatletas que compitieron el domingo en la distancia sprint de la Serie Triatlón en Puntarenas.
La dificultad estuvo tanto para personas experimentadas, como Catalina Torres y Pablo Herrera, ganadores en sus respectivas ramas, así como para quienes tienen menos recorrido en el triatlón.
Precisamente esas condiciones climáticas obligaron a la comisión del evento a cancelar la natación para la distancia estándar. Ricardo Barrios, director técnico de la carrera, explicó que la decisión se tomó por seguridad, ya que estaban convergiendo dos y hasta tres corrientes marinas en un mismo lugar.
Por lo tanto, estándar hizo una pequeña sección de carrera hasta la zona de transición y después culminaron el ciclismo y atletismo de manera normal.
Catalina Torres calificó la natación como “demasiado difícil”, no solo al momento de ubicarse para encontrar las boyas, sino también al salir del mar.
“La marea cambiaba demasiado, para ir a la primera boya estaba en una dirección, después estaba en otra, y saliendo peor, duramos como dos minutos en salir”, comentó la triatleta de Coopenae.
Un sentimiento similar expresó Herrera, de Momia Coaching, a quién le costó más la ubicación.
“La natación estuvo movida, costaba ubicarse y sobre todo ubicar la segunda boya, la salida era más fácil”.
Torres agregó que eso le hizo salir un poco frustrada porque perdió tiempo valioso, pero después durante el ciclismo pudo cumplir con sus objetivos y sacar mayor ventaja.
“Luego intenté hacer una carrera progresiva por kilómetros. La parte del zacate sí la sentí dura porque el terreno era bastante irregular, pero siento que corrí muy bien. Feliz porque el ambiente aquí es muy bonito, mucha gente compitiendo y siento que eso nos motiva a todos a dar el máximo esfuerzo”.
Para Herrera la carrera también se fue acomodando rápidamente. En el primer retorno del ciclismo se dio cuenta que tenía lejos a sus máximos competidores y logró manejar bien los tiempos.
“Me enfoqué en ampliar la ventaja más porque sabía que ellos iban a trabajarle específicamente a Allan (Naranjo) y Michael (Valladares) para que llegaran a la punta, logré ampliar esa ventaja y me bajé creo que con tres minutos de ventaja. Pude correr sin presión, y también cuidándome un tobillo que me había lastimado y la parte del zacate había que pasarla con cuidado”.
En general culminó “muy motivado” por volver a triunfar en el Puerto y tener mejores sensaciones que meses atrás.
“Pensar que lo que pasó de junio a acá y los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe fue una mala racha, un mal momento, ahora tengo que pasar esa página y continuar adelante con los que sigan apoyando”.
La Serie Triatlón Costa Rica cerrará el próximo 26 de noviembre con la tercera fecha en Quepos.
