Un total de 410 triatletas nacionales e internacionales se pusieron a prueba en el triatlón XTERRA Costa Rica, que se desarrolló este sábado en Las Catalinas, Guanacaste.
El estadounidense Josiah Middaugh, Campeón Mundial en 2015 y medalla de plata en 2012 y 2014, no defraudó y fue el gran ganador masculino del evento full (1.500 metros de natación, 22 kilómetros de mountain bike y 8 km de trail running) con un tiempo de 2:09:28. En la categoría élite femenina la vencedora fue la costarricense Raquel Solís (2:52:33).
Middaugh describió la carrera como nostálgica, “porque era un grupo pequeño de competidores con los que competía antes y de muy alto nivel como Leo Chacón, Rom Akerson, Branden Rakita, Javier Gómez; estuvo muy divertido y me encantó haber tenido esta oportunidad. Tuve una batalla muy fuerte con Leo y Dominik en la bici y después en el trail tuve que terminar de asegurar la carrera”, contó Middaugh, quien agregó que la locación de Las Catalinas es perfecta para esta modalidad del triatlón y calificó como “impecable” la organización.
Para Solís fue su primera experiencia en XTERRA, la cual describió como “realmente dura”.
“Este evento es un espectáculo, traté de prepararme lo mejor posible, llegamos con tiempo para hacer la ruta y de carrera y sentirme más familiarizada y eso me ayudó. La verdad que disfruté mucho de la preparación y por supuesto de la competencia”, resaltó Solís. Detrás de ella arribó su compañera de equipo Paloma Soto (3:22:16).
En masculino el segundo lugar fue para el austriaco Dominik Wychera (2:09:47) y Álvaro Campos, del equipo Coopenae, se ubicó como el mejor costarricense (2:16:35).
Mientras tanto, el extriatleta olímpico nacional Leonardo Chacón y parte de Performance Solutions, empresa organizadora de esta competencia, ocupó el cuarto lugar.
Campos, por su parte, quedó muy satisfecho de su debut en XTERRA. “La expectativa era muy distinta, el evento en general es muy diferente a lo que estoy acostumbrado, es un reto nuevo y fue muy bonito haber podido competir con grandes figuras de esta modalidad y muy gratificante, sin tener tanta experiencia, haber dado la pelea”, aseguró el triatleta de Coopenae.
Para Leonardo Chacón fue un gran logro como organización haber contado con deportistas de clase mundial en esta primera edición. “Quiero agradecer a todos los que creyeron en nosotros y vinieron a disfrutar, nuestro gran reto era tener una muy buena organización. Yo quería calidad mundial y Josiah siempre está en el top 10 del mundo, Dominik lo hizo genial, Álvaro también defendiendo el país, así que la verdad es que lo entregamos todo con el objetivo de dar el mejor espectáculo posible”, aseguró Chacón.
El español Javier Gómez Noya no pudo competir debido a una pequeña lesión en su espalda, provocada por una caída en una práctica de mountain bike que realizó el viernes. Por su parte, el nacional Rom Akerson, Campeón del Mundo XTERRA 2018, participó en la distancia full pero en grupos por edad y fue el ganador de la clasificación general.
XTERRA Costa Rica entregó 28 cupos en el triatlón distancia full para el Campeonato Mundial XTERRA 2024 y 58 cupos en la distancia de 30 km de trail running.
Además, este domingo 340 deportistas participaron en las disciplinas de aguas abiertas (400, 800, 1.600 y 3.200 metros) y trail running (15 y 30 kilómetros).
Coopenae se sumó como patrocinador oficial de esta prestigiosa competencia con el fin de seguir promoviendo el deporte, la salud y el bienestar de los costarricenses.
