Las selecciones nacionales de triatlón estuvieron cerca de colocarse alguna de las cuatro medallas (individuales y por equipos) que se disputaban este miércoles durante las pruebas en masculino y femenino de los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe 2023.
Álvaro Campos, Allan Naranjo y Pablo Herrera fueron los primeros en competir en San Salvador. Desde la natación Campos se pudo ubicar bien y salir en la cabeza de carrera, mientras que Pablo sufrió un golpe en el oído que lo terminó sacando al iniciar el ciclismo.
Campos estuvo disputando medalla durante gran parte del trayecto, pero al final del ciclismo Matthew Wright (Barabados) abrió una ligera ventaja y el nacional no pudo dejarse el bronce. Pese a eso, el cuarto puesto es histórico para el joven brumoso.
“Álvaro igualó el mejor resultado que hemos tenido en la historia, Leo Chacón quedó cuarto en dos ocasiones. Estamos muy contentos, todo lo hizo bien y era el atleta más joven de todos los que disputaron medalla”, comentó Roberto Solano, entrenador de la Selección Nacional.
Ese sentimiento también quedó plasmado en las palabras de Álvaro, quien debutó en estas justas.
“Estoy muy contento, las sensaciones son muy buenas. Feliz de plasmar una buena natación y un buen evento en general, algo que me ha costado este año, todo va mejorando y apuntando a una mejor proyección”, mencionó en declaraciones al Comité Olímpico Nacional.
Álvaro cerró la carrera en 1:47:21, a 2:30 del primer lugar, el mexicano Aram Peñaflor, mientras Allan finalizó en el puesto 17 (+12:50).
“La idea con Allan era retirarlo y ponerlo en el relevo mixto, pero nos la jugamos y completó el evento, estuvimos mucho rato peleando plata y bronce (por equipos), pero al final perdimos posiciones. No tiene aún la resistencia para un evento tan largo y caliente”, explicó Solano.
En mujeres sucedió algo similar, porque Costa Rica luchó por la presea de equipos con Raquel Solís y Catalina Torres; sin embargo, Cuba le “quitó” ese preciado puesto a las nacionales.
En general, explicó Roberto, no fue un buen día para Raquel, mientras Catalina hizo una gran carrera en apenas su segunda carrera en distancia olímpica.
“Raquel salió en un primer grupo pero muy ajustada. Se intentó, pero no pudo conectar a las primeras, entonces se quedó retrasada para ubicarse con Catalina y el segundo grupo, donde nadie tiró y perdieron minutos. Se bajaron con diferencias de tres minutos, que no era tanta, pero estaba muy caliente”.
Finalmente, en la sección de atletismo, Catalina se sintió mejor y concluyó sétima, a 9:48 de Maria Velásquez, ganadora con tiempo de 1:59:31. Solís cerró novena a +10:36.
“No muy contentos con esa carrera, Raque no tuvo su mejor día y Catalina estuvo excelente. Pero nos costó mucho ante México y Colombia. Contra Cuba sí teníamos posibilidades, pero una de ellas sí iba en el primer grupo que con la que Raque va normalmente (en otras carreras) y al quedar cortada no pudo. Ahora vamos a intentar el bronce en el relevo mixto”, añadió Solano.
La competencia de este viernes será a las 9 am.
